Quick and intuitive evaluation of 76 to 81 GHz automotive radomes and bumpers

The R&S®QAR is the ideal tool for characterising automotive radomes and bumpers during R&D and production. Due to its comparability with vector network analyzer (VNA) based measurement setups, the R&S®QAR measurement results are compatible with existing setups for material characterization. The R&S®QAR is simple to operate with measurement results easy to interpret. Its unique features help to significantly speed up the development process of new radomes.

1. Measurement of design emblems

Using hundreds of antennas, the R&S®QAR creates a spatially resolved image of the reflectivity of automotive radomes in the mmW frequency domain. Parts of the radome with deviation reflection due to e.g. thickness or permittivity differences can be easily identified. Based on a threshold for mean reflectivity and standard deviation, automation software in production can make decisions on well defined pass / fail criteria. Optionally, the 1-way attenuation of the radome is measured.  


2. Comparability of measurements

The recorded results are comparable to reflection and transmission loss measurements using a vector network analyzer (VNA). The transmission and reflection parameters of the DUT are captured with software options R&S®QAR-K10 and R&S®QAR-K50. The measurements are non-destructive and therefore suitable for production and quality assurance tests. Thanks to its imaging capabilities, the measurement contains information regarding the correct positioning of the sample.


3. Extended homogeneity analysis

Using the R&S®QAR-K20 software, it is possible to perform an even more detailed analysis of the reflection of design emblems. The upgrade enables the user to freely define an evaluation grid on the measurement results. The mean reflection and its standard deviation can be evaluated in each cell independently.


4. Mounting position measurement

Automotive radar sensors are usually integrated invisibly behind vehicle bumpers or brand emblems (radomes). For the sensors to operate as expected, they must be installed in the intended location precisely behind the area of the bumper or radome that is transparent to radar signals. The R&S®QAR equipped with the R&S-K100 Software allows pushbutton checking of sensors behind already installed bumpers or radomes for radiation in the right direction and a free view of the surrounding area.
