Smarter Battery Management for Safer, Longer-Lasting EVs
ST’s Battery Management System (BMS), centered around the L9963E battery monitoring and balancing IC and the L9963T isolated transceiver, is built for advanced safety and efficiency. Combined with ST’s 32-bit MCUs, power management ICs, VIPower smart switches, protection devices, and EEPROMs, this ASIL-compliant platform provides:

  • Battery Protection – Real-time monitoring of voltage, current, and temperature prevents overcharge, over-discharge, and overheating.
  • Battery Monitoring – By estimating the battery pack state of charge (SoC) and state of health (SoH) during charging and discharging.
  • Battery Optimization – Thanks to cell balancing that improves the battery life and capacity, thus optimizing the driving range for hybrid (HEV), plug-in (PHEV) and full electric vehicles (BEV). Keeps the battery charge level consistent by allocating spare cells in accordance with the battery's longevity.


By supporting up to 14 battery cells and scalable daisy-chain communication, the L9963E also enables flexible implementation in high-voltage battery systems (48V and above), while delivering low-EMI, long-distance, and reliable data transfer via transformer-isolated interfaces.

High-Efficiency Traction Inverters: Unlocking Full Motor Performance
The traction inverter converts energy from the battery to drive motors in the drivetrain. This impacts the vehicles road performance, driving range, and reliability. Key factors include the inverter's weight and size. Inverters need to be able to handle the intense heat and vibration that they are subject to due to the automotive environment. Some energy is lost during the exchange. A more efficient traction inverter means more of the battery charge is usable. To help OEMs and system integrators design lighter, smaller, and more efficient inverters, ST offers a complete portfolio including:

  • AEC-Q101 qualified IGBTs and silicon / SiC MOSFETs & diodes
  • AEC-Q100 certified isolated gate drivers
